May Martin marks her centenary milestone

May Martin, one of our residents at Ashton House, Hyde (one of our Independent Living Schemes) has recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

She is seen here holding the flowers that were given to her by Jigsaw Group and scheme residents to mark this amazing milestone. May has lived in Ashton House for 22 years, making her not only the oldest resident but also the longest standing.

Being extremely ‘tech-savvy’, May is an example to us all and learned how to use a computer in her 80s. She regularly uses her laptop, tablet and mobile phone to keep in touch with all her family members on Facebook. She even requested a copy of the photo to be sent to her email address!

Born in Dukinfield on the 5 September 1919, May lived there until she moved to Kent with her husband, who was in the Royal Navy. When her husband was posted to Malta, she and her children moved over there with him. Eventually, they returned to Tameside.

May has greatly enjoyed her birthday celebrations – the Sheltered Housing Co-ordinator, Margaret Lennard, threw a birthday tea-party for her in the scheme. May also had a large family party in Ashton House, with over forty members of her family attending. This included her three children, six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
